5 Basic Ballet Positions for Beginners

Ballet is an intricate art that can be overwhelming for beginners. There are many different positions that potential dancers think can be accomplished, however, immense amounts of practice and motivation is required to master every step. All forms of Ballet are used to represent emotions, a story and character whilstร‚ย also allowing the dancers to build flexibility, strength and showcase grace. Mastering one position helps young dancers to build a foundation which makes it much easier to pick up the style of the other steps. The five basicร‚ย feet positions (beginner ballet Positions) to start the journey of mastering the art of Balletร‚ย areร‚ย as follows:ร‚ย

5 beginner ballet Positions

1st Positionร‚ย

1stร‚ย positionร‚ย of the feetร‚ย inร‚ย ballet is the easiest of the basic ballet positions where a dancer is standing with their heels together,ร‚ย and toes facing equally out to either sides. For a young beginner, the heels need to touch each other, whereas, for anร‚ย advanced dancer, no more thanร‚ย an inchร‚ย is to be between the heels. Mastering 1st position puts the dancer in a good place to learn other crucial ballet skills.ร‚ย 1stร‚ย position is the starting point for all young and new dancersร‚ย ร‚ย

2nd Positionร‚ย

2ndร‚ย Position is very closely related toร‚ย 1stร‚ย Positionร‚ย inร‚ย Ballet. This position requires the dancer to keep their feet about shoulder-distanceร‚ย apart. It is important not to have the second position too wideร‚ย as it will be hard to maintain balance, or too narrowร‚ย soร‚ย that it looks closer to theร‚ย 1stร‚ย Position. This position is just as hard as any other position where the lack of hip rotationร‚ย (known as รขโ‚ฌหœTurn Outรขโ‚ฌย)ร‚ย or the abundance ofร‚ย ร‚ย Turn Out (hipร‚ย rotation)ร‚ย is more apparent than in 1stร‚ย Position.ร‚ย 2ndร‚ย Position is one of the fundamental feet positions in classical ballet.ร‚ย

3rd Position ร‚ย

3rdร‚ย Positionร‚ย is very rarely doneร‚ย by advanced dancers, though it still has a spot as one of the five basic balletร‚ย feetร‚ย positions. Focusing on proper Turn-Out, 3rd position calls for the heel of the left foot to be placed in front of the arch of the right foot or vice versa. The reason why this position is not very commonly used is mainly because it might look like a misplaced 1st position or 5th position, it is used mainly by younger dancers before advancing onto the more difficult 5th Position howeverร‚ย one mightร‚ย seeร‚ย that this position is still used in character dances in classical ballet performances.ร‚ย ร‚ย

4th Position ร‚ย

4thร‚ย Position is aร‚ย more advancedร‚ย positionร‚ย andร‚ย comes in two different options.ร‚ย  4thร‚ย opposite 1stร‚ย ร‚ย (also known as Open 4th) and 4thร‚ย opposite 5thร‚ย (Closed 5th) It is used inร‚ย different types of pirouettesร‚ย and other moving steps. To perform this position the right way, the dancer is to placeร‚ย one foot in front of the otherร‚ย inร‚ย either 1stร‚ย orร‚ย ร‚ย 5thร‚ย Position and them move the feetร‚ย about a foot’s distance apart whilstร‚ย keeping theร‚ย hips square,ร‚ย taking care not to twist them.ร‚ย It is also important to remember not to haveร‚ย this positionร‚ย too wideร‚ย as it will be difficult to transfer the weight onto either the back or front foot and also will be difficult to maintainร‚ย theร‚ย Turn Out properly.ร‚ย  Place too narrowร‚ย and the position can beร‚ย confused with a wide fifth position.ร‚ย The body weight is evenly distributed over both feet,ร‚ย either with feet remainingร‚ย flat on the floor, on the balls of the feetร‚ย (demi-pointe)ร‚ย or on the toesร‚ย (full pointe).ร‚ย ร‚ย

5th Position ร‚ย

The mostร‚ย difficult position of theร‚ย feetร‚ย is the fifth position. In order to present this position gracefully, the dancer is to stand with their feet close together, one in front of the other and turned out away from the body. The real difficulty in this position is maintaining straight legs andร‚ย equal Turn Out on each leg.ร‚ย  This position is used as the starting point in many classicalร‚ย balletร‚ย jumps and turns.ร‚ย 5thร‚ย Position isร‚ย a more mature position and takes practice in order to achieve it whilst maintaining good technique.ร‚ย
